JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test)

What is STA?

STA stands for “Special Testing Accommodations”. STA is a mandatory procedure for requesting non-standard exam conditions due to illness, injury, physical disability, or other conditions.

Who should apply for STA?

STA should be considered by any examinee that might:
• need to consume medicine DURING the test (including food / drink for medical reasons)
• wear health monitoring devices (such as an insulin meter)
• use hearing aids or reading glasses or a magnifying glass
• have developmental disabilities

What kind of accommodation requests can result from STA?

There are many possible requests such as enlarged test papers or use of a phone for glucose monitoring. Details are in the STA ZIP. For application purposes, all requests broadly fall under one of these two kinds:
• Request(s) that require a separate test room. Any request for extended time will automatically require this.
• Request(s) where the examinee can still be included together in the main test room with all other examinees. Usually this is a reading glasses or magnifying glass request.

How to apply for STA for use of reading glasses / magnifying glass / similar STA requests that DO NOT involve a separate test room.

1. Download and read the STA ZIP.
2. Apply and pay for the JLPT by using one of the main JLPT registration links.
3. On the JLPT application form on Eventbrite, select the appropriate answer for the question that mentions non-separate room STA.
4. Complete and submit the STA form (from step 1) by the deadline: March 25 (Wed) 5pm AEDT.

Typically, the steps above only apply to examinees who intend to bring reading glasses or a magnifying glass.
For use of other items, please enquire before registration starts as to if a separate room is required.
Every other STA request uses the steps below instead.

How to apply for any other STA (including time extension) that involves a SEPARATE TEST ROOM:

Most STA requests will require the examinee to be placed into a separate room. Be aware that it is not possible to be granted a time extension and to also attempt the test in the same room as the main examinees.
1. Download and read the STA ZIP.
2. Register for the JLPT using the special links on the JLPT webpage. They are separate from and replace the normal JLPT registration Eventbrite page. DO NOT use the normal JLPT registration pages.
3. Complete and submit the STA form (from step 1) by the deadline: March 25 (Wed) 5pm AEDT.
4. Late or non-submission of the STA form will result in the JLPT application being cancelled without refund.

IMPORTANT: Separate rooms are in very short supply. Sometimes a location will have only (1) or even none. This reflects increasing shortage of staff and rooms as well as evolving test considerations and rules. Furthermore, an option to share a separate room with another examinee who has the same/similar STA requests will not be offered anymore. Please do not apply for a separate test room unless absolutely necessary.
