JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test)
FAQs
Changes in application process due to COVID-19
Can you please add more spaces?
The Host Institution for each site determines the number of people who can take the Test based on the number of available rooms and the size of each room at the Test venue. These are affected by restrictions concerning the COVID-19 pandemic, including social distancing requirements. Such limitations have necessitated the restriction on application numbers.
My [university / employer] requires a JLPT qualification...."
We suggest that affected people should contact the party that requires a JLPT qualification. Ask if there is an alternative means by which to prove Japanese language proficiency, particularly in light of the current disruptions.
Why did Eventbrite say “unavailable” or “sold out” or ask for a code?
I was ready to book on the linked Eventbrite page at the start time or before the start time.
- Prior to the exact opening time, the Eventbrite page may have displayed a code to unlock. This typically occurs when JLPT organisers are adjusting settings and do not want the page to be visible while changes are being made.
- There are no promo codes in use. Depending on how you viewed the page (PC, tablet, phone, app, browser, etc) page layout can look different. On some displays, you will need to scroll the screen down to see all of the available levels, such as N5 which is at the bottom of the list.
- “Details” and “Remind me” buttons usually indicate that applications are not yet open and the buttons have further details you can follow.
- “Unavailable” – we have observed that this tends to display when a level is not yet “Sold out” but the last remaining place(s) are already in the process of being completed by another applicant(s). This seems comparable to cinema reserved seating systems or airline seat bookings systems. Customers who start the registration process but have not yet clicked to pay are given time to fill in the form. During this time, Eventbrite temporarily removes a space from availability while the buyer completes their form and payment. If someone abandons or cancels their application before paying, then the place is released and becomes available for another applicant to claim and start their registration. Once all applications are completed and paid for, the notice becomes “Sold out”.
For Registration
Can I register after the application deadline?
No, you cannot. Strictly no late applications will be accepted.
I am a parent/guardian/teacher. Can I register for my child/student on behalf of him/her?
Yes, you can. Take care to fill in your child’s name and details in the main section of the application form. Sometimes a parent will incorrectly fill in their own name as the examinee!
TIP: A teacher or parent can supply their own email address in lieu of that of their student or child. Most communication from JLPT organisers occurs via email. For security and privacy we will ONLY communicate with the email address as matching on the application form. If you supply your student or child’s personal email address then we will be unable to discuss inquiries originating from your email address.
I am a parent/guardian/teacher. Can I make group registration for my children/students?
Unfortunately this is not supported. The application form gathers information on the basis of individual examinees and so separate registration for each child is required.

Do I need to prepare a photograph?
You don’t need your photo when applying nor for your Test voucher PDF. However, on the day of the Test, examinees must bring a current, official, government-issued photo identification (ID), printed in English. The name and details on the ID should be exactly the same as those appearing on the Test Voucher. Acceptable forms of ID include a driver’s license, passport, Photo Card/Proof of Age Card or student ID that features a photo, name and date of birth. Unacceptable forms of ID include health care cards, credit cards or ATM cards. Photocopied ID will not be accepted. Digital ID is also unacceptable.
