Judges’ Comments – Video Matsuri 17th Anniversary

This year marks the 17th anniversary of the Video Matsuri. We would like to extend our
sincere thanks to all the teachers, parents, and supporters. With your encouragement, we were
pleased to receive a high number of entries once again, especially in the Junior Secondary
Division.

Congratulations to all participants and winners. The creativity and enthusiasm displayed in
the videos were truly impressive. It was clear that students enjoyed expressing themselves in
Japanese, and the high standard of entries made judging a real challenge. As a result, we
awarded ten special mentions, two First Prizes in the Junior Division, and one First Prize in
each of the other divisions.

This year’s theme was “mirror”, which students were required to incorporate in an
imaginative way. Some placed the mirror at the heart of their story, while others used it more
subtly. The judges thoroughly enjoyed discovering how each video integrated the theme, and
we were impressed by the originality shown.

In the Primary Division, students presented a wide range of genres. Many entries reflected
classroom learning, with prize-winning videos standing out for their strong storylines,
originality, and effective use of Japanese. The winning video was particularly memorable for
its unexpected twist ending.

In the Junior Secondary Division, popular genres included mystery, thriller, drama, and
horror. Students used sound effects and lighting skilfully to create atmosphere, and the two
winning entries were powerful, well-structured, and full of creativity. Through their stories,
students expressed their ideas with honesty and imagination.

Entries in the Senior Secondary and Tertiary Divisions often carried clear, thoughtful
messages. The use of Japanese was at a very high level, with careful attention to
pronunciation, accent, and intonation. The winning video in the Tertiary Division stood out
for its excellent camera work, direction, and high-quality editing.

A few entries had audio issues that made the dialogue difficult to hear. We encourage future
participants to use an external microphone or add audio in post-production to improve clarity.

We are delighted to see that the Video Matsuri continues to encourage language learning,
creativity, and teamwork. Thank you again to all students, teachers and families who took
part. We look forward to seeing more wonderful videos next year.
