How to Enrol

Starter Course 2026 Aki Term Enrolment

The Starter Course is suitable for absolute beginners, with enrolments accepted at the beginning of each academic year.^

Enrolment for the Starter Course in the 2026 Aki Term will be conducted through a lottery system. This is to ensure that everyone who has registered their interest is given an equal opportunity. You will be required to register your entry to the enrolment lottery pool via a registration link which will be available here from 1 April, Wednesday, 12noon (AEDT). Once the enrolment window has closed, students who have registered for the enrolment lottery pool will be selected at random and enrolment offers will be issued until class capacity is reached.

The Starter Course enrolment schedule is as follows:

  • April 1 (Wednesday), 12noon (AEDT) – Registration for enrolment lottery starts
  • April 7 (Tuesday), 11:59PM (AEST) – Registration for enrolment lottery closes
  • April 8 (Wednesday) – Lottery will be conducted and enrolment offers issued to those selected
  • April 8 (Wednesday) to April 12 (Sunday) – Payment window for enrolment confirmation

If you’d like to know more about the Starter Course before deciding to enrol, w
e will be holding three information sessions to provide more details such as course schedules and course material previews, including a Q&A session.
Details for the information sessions are available here.

For students who wish to begin their Japanese language studies sooner, we have a list of Japanese language schools in Sydney and outside of New South Wales for your reference.

^If you are not an absolute beginner to the Japanese language and would like to be considered for mid-year enrolment, please feel free to submit an Enquiry and Self-Level Checker Form.

*Please see our terms and conditions for more course enrolment requirements.

If you have prior experience studying Japanese and would like to continue your studies through J-Course, please follow the steps below.

1. Submit an enquiry

  1. Complete the enquiry form below, including details about your Japanese language background and experience
  2. Use our Self-Level Checker form below to help us determine which of our courses is most suitable for you
  3. Once submitted, the J-Course team will get in touch with you shortly after to discuss with you the next steps

*Please Note:

  • Spots in classes may not always be immediately available. In this case, you will be given the option of being placed on a waiting list, where you’ll be contacted once a spot becomes available.
  • Non-beginners (i.e. those wishing to enrol in the Elementary 1 course or higher) are eligible to apply to join a course at any time during the academic year. Class availabilities will determine when you will be able to commence your studies with us.

2. Placement Test

Once a spot in class becomes available, the J-Course team will contact you to complete a placement test, so we can confirm the most suitable class level for you.

The placement test consists of a written assessment that will be emailed to you and a mini-interview with our Language Consultant conducted online via Zoom.

*Please note – the placement test is additional to the Self-Level Checker

3. Enrolment

  • Once we have confirmed your current Japanese level, you will be sent an enrolment offer email, where a spot is available in your agreed class.
  • Enrolment, included purchase of textbook(s) and payment of course fees, are made via Eventbrite or in person at our Chippendale center.
