Update: #ASAA2020 Conference [Cancelled]
BACKGROUND
On March 20, the Asian Studies Association of Australia (ASAA) announced its decision to cancel the ASAA 2020 Conference which was to have been held at The University of Melbourne, July 6-9.
The Japan Foundation, Sydney had been in the process of working with both the ASAA and the Japanese Studies Association of Australia (JSAA) to support an increased Japan-related presence at ASAA 2020, so it was with regret that we received this news.
Nonetheless, we wanted to take this opportunity to share how we had planned to participate in the conference, with the aim of inviting feedback and suggestions that might shape our future participation in other major local conferences.
OUR (ERSTWHILE) PLANS FOR #ASAA2020
Following a consultation process that began in August 2019 (consisting of a survey of Japan-related researchers as well as direct consultation with the ASAA conference committee and JSAA), our plans for #ASAA2020 were as follows:
- Support a roundtable discussion on student mobility, organised by JSAA President Associate Professor Beatrice Trefalt (Monash University)
- Support a panel of recent New Voices in Japanese Studies authors through our New Voices Scholar program
- Provide a photographic exhibition on Japanese fashion and support an exhibition talk as part of the conference program (pending venue availability)

While these initiatives will no longer be taking place, The Japan Foundation, Sydney wishes to thank the many individuals and organisations who contributed to this project through their willingness to discuss and collaborate. They include:
