Steam Dreams Event Series
February 12 – May 19, 2021
Coinciding with the Steam Dreams: The Japanese Public Bath exhibition, The Japan Foundation, Sydney presents the Steam Dreams Event Series, an event program exploring the concept of sentō (public bathhouse) as a cultural touchstone and all the different ways it brings people together. Sentō is a space that unites community, where locals have gathered for centuries to soak, exchange news and enjoy quiet banter.
Running from February to May, this event series features a selection of free film screenings, workshops and a catalogue launch and talk event. First, take a deep dive into the world of Japanese bathing culture with monthly free film screenings at Palace Central. In March, learn about the history of sentō from the materials used to bathhouse preservation in contemporary society in the exhibition catalogue launch and talk event. Finally, get into the spirit of sentō with tile painting and stamp making workshops for kids in April and May.
