Yomikikase : Japanese Storytime for Children – Bon-odori
August 22, 2026
Bring your children along to enjoy some storytelling and special activities at our library. We will practise bon-odori, a type of carnival dance with a repetitive choreography danced in a circle, to celebrate Obon, a popular custom practised in the seventh month of the lunar calendar which combines Buddhist events with ancient Japanese ancestral rites.
Although the level of the selected picture book will be best suited for 4 to 8-year-olds in the Japanese school education system, this event welcomes all primary and secondary school children with a good understanding of spoken Japanese. Children under 12 must be supervised by a guardian. In order to maintain a safe environment for dance activities, we accept only a limited number of participants and will also apply an age-limit. Please secure your space via our booking form.
The library has a rich collection of Japanese children’s books (over 1,500 volumes) and books on Japanese language education as heritage (community) language. The majority of the collection is available for loan.
About our dance instructors: MOSAIC Japanese Folk Dance Group

MOSAIC Japanese Folk Dance Group is a community based dance group in Chatswood with 29 years of history. We would like to introduce Japanese culture and history through Bon-odori, the Japanese Folk Dance. Taught by Mrs Kay Tang, 2021 NSW Senior Volunteer of the Year, our repertoire has now grown to as many as twenty dances. We are going to dance Tōkyō Ondo, the most popular piece, with you and demonstrate Tanabata Odori with our original choreography.
