FY2026-27 Japanese Thought and Philosophy Grant Program

**Application open for FY 2026-27**

This grant aims to support projects that promote the ideas, philosophies, ways of life, and values of Japanese society and culture, foster dialogue across divides, and advance knowledge rooted in Japan and Asia. Suitable projects include conferences, lectures, presentations and publications conducted/produced in Australia by Australian non-profit organisations. Individuals are not eligible to apply. In principle, successful candidates may be granted up to $4,000 (incl. GST), depending on the nature of the project.

FAQ: Japanese Thought and Philosophy Grants

How do I apply for a Japanese Thought and Philosophy grant?

Please contact the Japanese Studies Department (see the contact details at the top right of this page) with a brief outline of your project and proposed dates to confirm that it falls within the scope of the grant program. If your project is eligible, a team member will send you an application form to complete.

Can I use Japanese Thought and Philosophy grant to attend a conference in Japan?

No. This grant is designed to facilitate Japan-related research dialogue in Australia. Neither conference attendance nor travel from Australia to Japan fall under the remit of this program.

Can I use Japanese Thought and Philosophy grant funding to bring a scholar to Australia to give a Japan-related guest lecture?

Only Australian domestic travel expenses, i.e., airfares, transportation and accommodation expenses for visiting scholars may be covered by the grant.  Please note that support for international airfares is not covered.

Do Japanese Thought and Philosophy grants cover catering for networking events?

No, catering expenses are not eligible under this program. Examples of eligible expenses include venue hire, publicity costs (e.g., flyer production and printing) and travel expenses for visiting scholars.

Can I pay for administrative staff or research assistants with Japanese Thought and Philosophy grant funds?

Administrative expenses are generally not eligible for funding. However, remuneration for specialist staff can be covered by the grant on an honorarium basis.
