Yomikikase : Japanese Storytime for Children – Sri Lanka

While we have primarily featured works by Japanese authors thus far, around 20% of picture books published in Japan are translations of works originally written in other languages, enabling children to become familiar with foreign customs and cultures through the Japanese text. As the first instalment in our series exploring picture books from around the world, this time we introduce picture books and culture from Sri Lanka. During the craft session later on, we will make name plates using Sinhala letters, which are one of Sri Lanka’s official languages. Their shapes are just as interesting as Japanese hiragana characters!

This event is delivered in Japanese and is aimed at children who speak Japanese at home from nursery school age to the early years of primary school.

The library has a rich collection of Japanese children’s books (over 1,400 volumes) and books on Japanese language education as heritage (community) language. The majority of the collection is available for loan.

幼稚園児から小学校低学年の児童を対象にした日本語よみきかせ会です。これまで主として日本人作家の作品を取り上げてきましたが、日本の絵本出版では海外原作のものが約２割を占め、日本語で海外の習俗や文化に親しむことができます。海外の絵本を読む試み第一弾として、今回はスリランカの絵本と文化を紹介します。後半の工作ではスリランカの公用語の一つであるシンハラ語の文字でネームプレートを作ります。ひらがなに負けないぐらい面白い形をしてますよ！
