【Message from the presenter】
Being read aloud to is an enjoyable activity for children, and one they especially like. Reading aloud has been proven to provide various benefits such as providing children with a sense of security, enabling parents and children to share their feelings, and helping children develop language and cognitive skills. Reading aloud is strongly recommended to Japanese families living overseas to develop their children’s Japanese language ability. It’s an activity widely engaged in by overseas Japanese families and Japanese schools. In this seminar, I will aim to provide tips on how overseas Japanese families and schools can ‘turbo-charge’ children’s favorite activity of reading aloud to develop their Japanese language ability at home and in schools. I hope that seminar participants will experience the difference between ‘reading TO children’ and ‘reading WITH children’. the seminar will also provide a hands-on opportunity for parents to practice reading with children. I very much look forward to meeting you and working together with you in this seminar.

Prof. Masako Douglas
Ph.D., Professor Emerita of Japanese
Japanese Program, Department of Asian and Asian American Studies, California State University, Long Beach
Prof. Douglas’s connection to Japanese heritage language education can be traced back to the days when she had to think about how to develop her US-born and raised son’s Japanese language ability. With no plans to return to Japan, Prof. Douglas’s major concern was how she could create an enjoyable and sustainable learning environment for him to learn Japanese while being educated in English at an American school. She decided to create and teach a Japanese language program run on Saturdays at the Japanese nursery school her son attended in California. She went on to create Japanese as a heritage language (JHL) classes in university Japanese programs. Prof. Douglas has centred her research and practice around curriculum design, teaching Japanese as a foreign/heritage language (JFL/JHL), and development of JHL literacy. She has conducted many workshops for JFL/JHL teachers and JHL parents. Currently, Prof. Douglas is working on designing instructional activities that assist JHL children to move from early-stage literacy, where they enjoy being read books aloud, to the next stage where they learn to read by themselves. She is also currently heavily involved in the promotion and advocacy of JHL education and heritage language education for other languages, serving as a chair of JHL SIG (Japanese as a Heritage Language Special Interest Group) of the American Association of Teachers of Japanese, a team member of the National Coalition of Community-Based Heritage Language Schools, a board member of Bilingual Multilingual Child Network, and a curriculum advisor of Orange Coast Gakuen Japanese School.
