The Magic and Majesty of the Princess Kaguya: From Ghibli Film to Classical Literature

Discover the timeless story of The Tale of Princess Kaguya through a special two-part event celebrating one of Japan’s oldest and most beloved stories. Begin with a screening of Studio Ghibli’s Academy Award-nominated masterpiece, directed by Isao Takahata, renowned for its breathtaking hand-drawn watercolour animation and moving exploration of freedom, love and the beauty of life.

Then join scholar of early Japanese history and translator Matthew Stavros for an engaging talk on the original Taketori Monogatari (The Tale of Princess Kaguya), widely regarded as the earliest surviving Japanese narrative and the “ancestor of all tales.” Coinciding with the release of the first complete bilingual English edition, the talk will explore the language, mythology, humour and cultural significance that have inspired audiences for over a thousand years.
