Online Workshops for Japanese Language Teachers

Let’s create digital resources! – Enhance your skills in ICT

The Japan Foundation, Sydney will offer five types of sessions for enhancing skills in ICT. Please take this opportunity to challenge yourself to use applications you have been hesitant to try, or you have been wanting to try but felt too late to ask. We encourage you to try any sessions that look appealing or stir your curiosity after reading the session description. The sessions are structured so that the applications can be learned in just one session. Each session will be conducted online and run approximately 60-90 minutes. We look forward to your participation!

Workshops will be conducted in Japanese and English.

NOTE:

Each session will not be limited to learning about the ICT tools, however, there will be practical components of using the tool to develop sample resources. You will each be developing sample resources modelling a JPF resource or creating a resource that is appropriate for use in your class. Participants will be provided with all materials required to create the sample resource (e.g. images, audio, etc.).

While the sessions do not specify the school stage of intended learners, prepared sample resources will demonstrate target stage groups such as primary or junior secondary

After participating in the workshop, please re-create your resources to adjust your class and stage. Please be advised that the aim of this ICT session is primarily to focus on how to create digital resources using applications, rather than sharing classroom resources specifically for your class.

A certificate will be given to participants upon completion of a sample task during or after the session. You must submit your task in order to receive the certificate.

“Utilise online tools to create an interactive Class!”

In this session, you will learn how to create and use tools for an interactive class, allowing two-way communication between the teacher and learners. Mentimeter allows easy access to learners’ feedback or comments. Nearpod allows teachers to verify learners’ understanding by uploading the lesson’s PPT on Nearpod and then featuring quizzes and or polls between the slides. By learning the basic functions of these two tools, we will create teaching resources applicable to the class. Master the use of these tools to expand students’ learning opportunities in class!

  1. Create a quiz form with various patterns such as multiple choice and short answer questions
  2. Create a quiz form implementing images and/or video
  3. Automatically collect data of the class’s average score and create graphs based on number of correct and incorrect answers
  4. Navigate how students can easily review their score and their incorrect answers

With these functions, creating, scoring and collecting data can be made easy and efficient.  Beginners to Google Forms are welcome to participate.

For this session, we will be creating a video using the Google Extension Loom. We will also deconstruct how to record and capture your PC screen and edit videos using the application Bandicam (free version). We will utilise the Photo application inbuilt in Windows 10 to edit videos.

Participants will create an explanatory video using a Google Slide presentation (displaying your face) or a PPT (hiding your face). Furthermore, we will learn how to capture parts of a YouTube clip and explore ways of editing those parts into sections for use.  This session will be delivered in simple Japanese

PPT has become a popular teaching tool, and we at The Japan Foundation, Sydney have been creating PPT resources in recent years. In this session, you will explore how PPT can be used effectively in your Japanese class and how interesting, engaging and interactive teaching materials can be created using PPT. Participants will first gain experience in using PPT animations to make simple and fun quizzes. You will then learn additional functions such as inserting images/sounds and further animation techniques such as page turning, door opening/closing and automatic slideshows to create a picture book. The Japanese resources introduced in this session are aimed at primary level, but the functions can be applied at any level.

“ThingLink for beginners: Make interactive images using ThingLink”

ThingLink is a tool that inputs additional information into digital images and displays the information as a popup. By using ThingLink, assignments that were made using one form of media (e.g. text) can be offered as multimedia content. This content can help learners develop a deeper understanding of the topic and also display a differentiation of their learning style.

In this workshop, you will learn the basic functions to use ThingLink. We will be developing a simple multimedia classroom resource based on an image of a map, and integrating relevant information from text and images. Additionally, resources such as video or audio will be embedded to further promote learners’ understanding through listening.

A range of resources can be freely integrated into the teaching materials to design content that fits various purposes.  Resource example
