Online Seminar: Teaching speech writing for beginner level Japanese

Message from The Japan Foundation, Sydney:

We celebrated the 50th Australian Japanese Language Speech Contest  in 2019.  Thank you so much for all the support that Japanese language teachers have provided to us in this long history.  We hope that this seminar will assist them to introduce or expand their teaching of speech writing in their classrooms.

Seminar Outline:

Have you considered including speeches in your lessons to enable your students to develop their ability and confidence in speech writing?
In this seminar, we will explore step by step the fundamentals of speech writing for beginners onwards using the book “Speech for Basic Level Japanese” produced by the Japan Foundation. In both Session A and Session B, you will learn even beginner students can create speeches based on the language they have learned, according to topics and content supplemented by vocabulary.  Let’s explore ways of enabling your students to do this!
This seminar is recommended for secondary and tertiary teachers but all Japanese teachers are welcome!

The seminar is related to a book 『初級からの日本語スピーチ – Speech for Basic Level Japanese』.  If your school is located in Australia or New Zealand and has participated in the ‘Survey on Japanese-Language Education Abroad’ in 2018, a copy of this book has been recently posted to the school. Although it is not essential to have this book to participate in the seminar, if you don’t have a copy and would like to purchase one, a limited number of copies are available from The Japan Foundation, Sydney. Details will be included in the seminar registration form.  This offer is only valid for seminar participants and is limited to one copy per person.

Certificate:

A participation certificate can be issued to participants who request one in the feedback form after each session. Feedback forms will be available for 2 weeks after the session date.

【Session A】

Basic principles – fundamental structure and development patterns

In Session A we will look at the basic structure of speeches for beginners, and order information using a flower chart which we will develop into a simple speech. This is a technique for putting together a speech using a simple framework and filling it in with vocabulary according to content.

This seminar will be conducted in simple Japanese.

Date: November 11 (Wednesday) 5:00pm-6:10pm AEDT & November 12 (Thursday) 6:30pm-7:40pm AEDT

Target: Secondary

Session A Registration

【NOTE】The reminder email including how to log in to Zoom will be sent approximately 24 hours before the start of each session.  If you register for multiple sessions, you will receive a separate email for each session at different time/day.  If you haven’t received the email by the morning of the session date, please check junk email first and then contact us.

【Session B】

Applications – more complex content and structure

In Session B we will again use the flow chart, but we suggest a more complex framework. Here we will also revise the structure of conversation. Rather than just listing information, we will add comparisons, causal relationships and analysis to the content of the speech.
