Meet Ochazukenori: A Horror Manga Artist, On All Things Horror Manga
November 6, 2019
Come face-to-face with the human behind the AAARRRRGGGHH
Ochazukenori makes a living by bringing many people’s worst fears to life on paper. Where do the stories come from? What’s it like when your life revolves around drawing and writing horror? What does it take to write a truly spinechilling story, and how do you instill a sense of fear in the reader within the static medium of manga? Horror manga artist Ochazukenori lifts the lid on horror manga life in this exclusive public talk, his first ever outside of Japan.
Ochazukenori (b. 1960) began creating manga as a child, and made his professional debut in 1984. Initially focussing on sci-fi manga, Ochazukenori first ventured into horror with The Horror Mansion (Sangekikan). He is known for his depictions of splatter and gore, and for psychothriller narratives that portray the hidden madness lurking in the human psyche. Ochazukenori has also created films based on his manga, including The Blinds (Blaindo) and The Horror Mansion (Sangekikan). Other manga titles include Mayoko-chan, TVO and Dictionary of Darkness (Ankoku Jiten).
The RETRO HORROR exhibition marks the first-ever showing of Ochazukenori’s work outside of Japan. Don’t miss his horror manga masterclass on November 7!
