Maneki-neko Decorating Workshop

August 17, 2019

Decorate your own ceramic maneki-neko piggy bank to take home!

The maneki-neko (beckoning cat) is a lucky charm made from ceramic believed to bring happiness and good fortune. Even though it is unclear how the first maneki-neko came to be, most agree that it first appeared in Japan during the Edo period (17th century to mid-19th century).

Traditionally, maneki-neko were white, but they now come in many colours including red, black and yellow. In Japan, you will often see maneki-neko at the entrance to shops for good luck. It is said that the right raised paw brings in good fortune and money, and the left raised paw attracts customers.

Each maneki-neko piggy bank can be decorated with pens, crayons and/or origami paper. All materials provided; participants are welcome to bring additional supplies.

This workshop is for school-aged children. Best suited for ages 7-12. Children under the age of 6 will require the assistance of a parent or guardian (parents/guardians accompanying children are free).

This workshop is presented by The Japan Foundation, Sydney and Simply Native Japan.
