Japanese Language Education Seminar with UNSW (Feb 5, 2023)

Creating networks of adults supporting Keishogo kids

The seminar will be conducted in Japanese.

For our thirteenth Japanese education seminar with UNSW, exploring the theme of raising Japanese-speaking children in Australia, we will hold a workshop for those who support Keishogo kids and their education, with a focus on establishing networks and sharing related resources.

What is KEISHOGO (繋生語)?

Keishogo is defined as the language that is born from connections with parents, family, and friends, and that creates further connections, generates new meanings, and passes these connections on to the next generation.

【Message from Australian Network for Japanese as Community Language (ANJCL)】

Through the ANJCL interview study conducted from 2021 to 2022, we learnt that people who support children growing up with Japanese language throughout Australia have a range of concerns.

Parents, as well as private tutors, teachers in various situations, and managers/administrators at large community language schools, have unique concerns and insights, and some have expressed a desire to be part of a network for sharing experiences and exchanging information.

So, we wondered if we could facilitate this kind of communication through the seminar and use it as a starting point for the formation of such a network.

Have you ever wondered “How do other schools do this sort of thing?” or “Wouldn’t it be nice to have someone to talk to?”  Parents, teachers, administrators, researchers – it doesn’t matter what your position is.  Please join us in sharing your thoughts with others and listening to the voices of people who are striving to support Keishogo kids.  (Kyoko Kasawaki / The University of Western Australia)
