Double Layered Town / Making a Song to Replace Our Positions
Dir Haruka Komori + Natsumi Seo / 2019 / 79 mins / Classification: Unclassified: All ages
Set in the town of Rikuzentakata in Iwate Prefecture, Japan, in the year 2031, Double Layered Town is a story by Natsumi Seo, planting the seeds for new folktales born in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011.
The town that once stood and the one built after the completion of land elevation work ─ four travelers who know neither head for Rikuzentakata in 2018 and listen to what the local people have to say, holding repeated dialogues and reciting stories together. In the process, the travelers find their own voices through cycles of listening, reporting and retelling. This film is a visual record of a site where a “succession” is initiated, providing a bridge to new encounters and communication, captured with a delicate touch by filmmaker Haruka Komori.
This film screening is part of the Storymakers in Contemporary Japanese Art exhibition and event series. For more details on the program, please scroll down.
