Yomikikase : Japanese Storytime for Children – Bon-odori

Bring your children for a fun session of storytelling and special activities at our library. We will feature Obon (popular customs practised in the seventh month of the lunar calendar, which have been established by combining Buddhist events with ancient Japanese ancestral rites) in our stories and practice fan bon-odori (a kind of carnival dance which usually has a choreography that is repeated throughout the song and is danced in a circle) to deepen the knowledge on this folk custom in Japan.
Although the level of the selected picture book will be best suited for 4 to 8-year-olds in the Japanese school education system, this event welcomes all primary and secondary school children with a good understanding of spoken Japanese. Children under 12 must be supervised by a guardian. In order to maintain a safe environment for dance activities, we accept only a limited number of participants and will also apply an age-limit. The library has a rich collection of Japanese children’s books (over 1,400 volumes) and books on Japanese language education as heritage (community) language. The majority of the collection is available for loan.
About our dance instructors: MOSAIC Japanese Folk Dance Group
MOSAIC Japanese Folk Dance Group is a community based dance group in Chatswood with 28 years of history. We would like to introduce Japanese culture and history through Bon-odori, the Japanese Folk Dance. Taught by Mrs Kay Tang, 2021 NSW Senior Volunteer of the Year, our repertoire has now grown to as many as twenty dances. We are going to dance Tankō-bushi, the most popular piece, with you and demonstrate Sakura Ondo with our original choreography.
児童を対象にした日本語よみきかせ会、今回はお盆特別企画です。日本古来の先祖信仰と仏教行事が長い年月を経て習合し、現在のお盆の慣習となりました。前半はお盆をテーマにした幼稚園児から小学校低学年向けの作品を、図書館の日本語絵本・紙芝居コレクションの中から選んで、よみきかせを行います。後半はチャッツウッドのコミュニティ・グループであるモザイク・ジャパニーズ・フォーク・ダンス・グループの皆さんと一緒に盆踊りを楽しみます。
当館では児童書（約1,400冊超）及び、継承語（繋生語）教育に関する図書を数多く揃えております。この機会に是非ご利用ください。

ジャパン・ファウンデーション・シドニー図書館、並びに豪州繋生語研究会では、児童を対象にした日本語読み聞かせイベントをお手伝いいただけるボランティアを随時募集しています。
ボランティア業務内容は以下の通りです。
- 日本語絵本・紙芝居の読み聞かせ実演（準備作業を含む）
- 工作の指導（準備作業を含む）
- 歌の実演（準備作業を含む）
- 会場設営・撤収作業
お申込みにあたり、以下の要件を満たす必要があります。
- NSW州WWC Numberを保持していること。
WWC (Working With Children) Numberは子どもと接する仕事・ボランティアに就く方には必須となります。ボランティア・カテゴリーでの申請費用は無料です。 - イベント当日に準備・後片付けも含めて3時間ほど業務に就けること。読み聞かせイベントは土曜日（午前10時～午後4時の間）に一～二カ月に一度程度で開催予定です。
- 必要に応じてイベント当日以外にもミーティング、準備作業に参加できること。
