Would you like to start your Japanese language learning journey?
In our free Starter Course Information Sessions, we provide the opportunity to learn more about our beginner’s level Starter Course and give participants a taste for our lesson design, style, and structure. During this session, we will also introduce the Starter Course structure, as well as the textbooks we use during the course.
About the Starter Course
The Starter Course is the beginner’s level in our J-Course curriculum which runs on a continuing schedule of 4 x 10-week terms per academic year. Enrolment for this course is taken on at the beginning of our academic calendar, with the first term of this course being designed for absolute beginners. - Enrolment applications for the Starter Course will be open prior to the commencement of the first term. Please see our ‘How to Enrol’ page for more details.
- Attending the information session is not a requirement to register for enrolment into the Starter Course.
We are holding a free online information session for those who are interested in enrolling for our Starter level course in the upcoming Aki (first)Term of the 2025/26 academic year.
During this session, we will be providing more details surrounding J-Course, the course schedule, provide a glimpse at some sample course material, and give you an opportunity to ask any questions that you may have pertaining to the course.

When will enrolment be accepted for the Starter Course in the Aki Term 2025?
Those who are interested in enrolling will be required to register their interest. The registration enrolment window for the Starter Course in the Aki Term 2025 will be open between April 4, 2025 (Friday) and April 7, 2025 (Monday).
How will the enrolment process work for the Starter Course in the Aki Term 2025?
Invitations to register for enrolment will be available closer to the date. Once the enrolment window is closed, enrolment for the class will be conducted through a lottery system. Students will be selected at random from the enrolment pool and enrolment offers will be issued until class capacity is reached.
Will we offer future enrolment opportunities for the first term of the Starter Course?
The Japan Foundation, Sydney and J-Course structure our academic year as 4 consecutive academic terms. As such, enrolment into the first term of any course, including the Starter Course, is only offered and accepted once per academic year.
Do I need to be a Japan Foundation, Sydney member in order to register for the enrolment lottery?
If you are not yet a Japan Foundation, Sydney member, you do not need to become a member to register for the Starter Course enrolment lottery. You will only be prompted to join as a Japan Foundation, Sydney member if you are selected and once an enrolment offer is issued.
