Contemporary Ceramics
Ryota Aoki & Gentaro Yokoyama
March 1 – April 7, 2017
The first Australian exhibition of Japanese ceramicists Ryota Aoki and Gentaro Yokoyama justifies the hype around these two acclaimed kogei-ka (master artisans). Aoki’s glaze developments range from lava-like metallic to soft pastels that spill out of rough vessels and sleek tableware. With a playful edge, Yokoyama’s (Gent Ceramics) work shows a frenzied passion for the medium, with expert thrown and hand built forms, to suggestive slip-casts in a vibrant palette. Both artists are members of Ikeyan (founded by Aoki), a group of emerging Japanese ceramic artists committed to expanding the futures of their medium.
This exhibition was developed in co-operation with Ion Fukuzawa (Mukumono Ceramics) and supported by Ryota Aoki Pottery and Gent Ceramics. Opening night, March 1 2017, was held in conjunction with Art Month Sydney’s ‘Art at Night’.
